7 Reasons Why You Should Start Rock Climbing in 2019

2018 is coming to an end and it is the time when everyone is busy setting new goals for 2019. If you are thinking about picking up a new sport, look no further, we will tell you why you should rock climb!

1.  It’s a full body workout!

You would think that rock climbing mainly requires arm strength and you would be surprised at all the different kinds of muscles needed to rock climb! Apart from arm strength, you will need finger strength, core strength, leg power, lats muscles, endurance, and flexibility. Apart from getting stronger, your body will start to transform and get leaner and more ripped. You might get some soreness at first but in the long run, your body will thank you for it.

2. You will get smarter from rock climbing

How in the world will rock climbing make you smarter, you might ask? The answer lies in the way climbing works. Climbing a route is like solving a puzzle with your body. You will be required to only use certain hand holds and foot holds to complete a route. In order to achieve that, you will need more than just strength. Agility, body awareness, body control, spatial ability, planning, balance, concentration – these are the factors that decide if you are able to complete a certain route.

3. Rock climbing is a perfect fat burning activity

An 80kg person burns approximately 488 calories during half an hour of climbing – that makes rock climbing one of the highest fat burning sports out there. If your goal in 2019 is to shed some unwanted pounds, you have just found the perfect sport! Of course, if you are living in Penang like us, you will definitely need to do rock climbing because there is no way that you can keep up with all the amazing food out there!

4. It is a sport suitable for children and adults

If you can walk, you can climb! There is no age limit for climbing. At Project Rock, we have people of all ages climbing. There are researches that show the mental and physical benefits of climbing on children and it is proven to help autistic children to increase their motor skills and provide them with sensory inputs. Apart from that, climbing together with your children will be a great parent-child bonding time.

5. Rock climbing is a fun way to meet new friends!

Rock climbing, especially in a climbing gym, is a very social sport. There is plenty of downtimes when you are taking breaks in between climbs. You will be able to meet people from all walks of life and it’s not uncommon for people to meet their life partners when they are climbing!

6. Rock climbing will be in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo!

For the first time in history, rock climbing will be included in The Olympics Games! This has shown that rock climbing is being recognized as a legitimate and competitive sport worldwide. If you train hard enough, you might be even able to try to qualify for the games!

7. Project Rock is the first indoor bouldering gym in Penang!

Bouldering is a form of climbing where you just need to put on a pair of climbing shoes and climb! The wall is about 13 to 15 feet tall and there is a safety mat at the bottom to cushion off your fall. It is air-conditioned at Project Rock so that you can climb comfortably regardless of the weather!
